braces for adultsAdult braces can be used to correct dental problems such as overcrowded teeth, crooked teeth, bite anomalies, jaw joint problems and jaw position. Bite abnormalities may either occur as overbites or underbites and may be quite difficult to control without braces.

It is less common to find an adult wearing braces. This is one of the reasons why many people find it hard to wear braces as adults as they get nervous about how people will react. Most of the adults who get braces as adults did not have the opportunity to wear braces when they were still young.

Some of the adults may have relapsed teeth as a result of previous orthodontic work which now need retreating. Another group of adults may find that their teeth have moved as a result of age, or they have started experiencing jaw and tooth problems as a result of orthodontic issues.

Various Types of Adult Braces

Some years back, the only available braces were metal braces. Many adult patients, however, found this unpalatable. This is no longer the case nowadays as you can now find lots of alternatives to metal braces including Damon braces, clear fixed braces, ceramic braces and lingual braces. There have been scientific developments that have led to the creation of clear or invisible braces. Since these braces are made from transparent plastic that fits tightly over the patient’s teeth they are much less visible than traditional braces.

The good news is that these braces can be removed for short periods if necessary. There is no need for you to feel embarrassed when going for that first date or job interview as you can remove them and enjoy your time without anybody noticing that you use adult braces.

“Speed” Braces

Because adult teeth tend to be firmly fixed in their mouth, adult treatment will take longer than that of adolescents. However the new look the braces will give you outweigh the time required for effective treatment. There is even what we call “speed” dental braces for adults to cut the time your teeth need to straighten out. With this type of braces, you can take only about a year and some months to recover compared to regular braces which take two years to straighten teeth. Speed braces use a technology which slides the wire automatically to suit the bite of the patient comfortably. Since there is no need for extra rubber bands or wires, the adjustment process will be a little bit easier. Because of their minuscule size, the speed braces make the cleaning of teeth much easier as it allows for excellent toothbrush control. Your tooth will also be less prone to decalcification since the braces have small sized brackets.

It is never too late to have your teeth fixed. No need to experience any form of discomfort when eating or drinking. You can now be more confident smiling knowing that your teeth are straight and healthy. Adult braces can solve your dental problems. The process of selecting braces should be left to a professional dentist since they know what is good for your teeth.
